What is Self Development

The American Psychological Association (APA) Dictionary of Psychology defines self development as the growth or improvement of one’s qualities and abilities. Over time we have all developed a particular set of skills and abilities and naturally seek to be better in certain areas and become our best self.

Why Do We Seek Self Development

According to Maslow Hierarchy of needs as human beings we each have necessities which are essential to our survival. First and foremost we require our basic physiological needs of food and clothing in order to survive. Once our basic needs are met we then move upwards on the hierarchy to another set of needs. Until we have acquired the needs on the level we are on, the needs on the upper levels bear little importance to us as we feel our basic needs are not being met.

From the bottom upwards, the needs are physiological (food and clothing), safety and security, love and belonging, esteem and finally at the top self-actualization.

As we see above, once our basic physiological needs are met we search for the next level of needs and this goes on until we reach the final level of self actualization.

This is where persons are no longer in survival mode but are rather seeking fulfillment, to be their best selves to live their best lives. If for some reason a lower need is not met we revert down the pyramid.

This in turn increases our abilities and can open doors for new opportunities in both our professional and personal lives.

When we develop ourselves we tend to have a more purpose filled existence. We procrastinate less, become more focused on our goals and become more dedicated towards achieving them. We tend to spend our time more efficiently and and on things that can positively benefit and improve of life.
